Directed Studies
Directed studies allow students to pursue areas of special interest, as well as courses not offered at a given time. Directed Studies are limited to 15 units for M.Div students and 10 for M.A. students.
Students should discuss their interest in a directed study with their academic adviser prior to contacting a professor and setting up a course plan. Upon approval by the academic adviser, and if necessary the Academic Dean, the student should contact the professor/instructor to discuss his or her willingness to direct the study. If the professor/instructor is not a part of the teaching faculty of MB Biblical Seminary, the student must first contact the Academic Dean for approval. MB Biblical Seminary faculty are limited to three directed studies in any semester. There is no limit during the summer.
A directed study required a total of 37.5 hours of study time per unit. There should be a minimum of three hours of consultation between the professor/instructor and the student for each unit of credit granted. If the professor/instructor gives less than the minimum consultation, a reduced payment to the professor is to be negotiated with the Academic Dean. If multiple students are engaged in the same directed study, payment is not to exceed 1-unit of load credit per 3-unit course. A syllabus/learning covenant will be designed by the professor/instructor and the student and submitted to the Registrar’s office. Grading will be by letter grade. Directed studies are not eligible for Credit/No Credit grading.
Directed Studies are not available for courses currently being offered, or courses offered during the semester immediately preceding or following the current semester. Exceptions must be approved by the Academic Dean.
A Special Course Registration form for directed study, signed by the faculty, must be submitted to the Registrar. Registration is handled during regular registration periods. Directed studies are charged according to the per unit rate published on the fee schedule. They are not subject to bursary discounts.
